The Office of Military-Affiliated Students (OMAS) assists student veterans, ROTC cadets, and other military-affiliated students in making successful transitions into and out of the Brown community. We do this by offering programs and support services that facilitate learning opportunities within the military-affiliated and Brown community at large, connecting students to campus and community resources, and by supporting and advocating for our student veterans and ROTC cadets. OMAS also engages with Brown students interested in learning more about the military-affiliated community and with students exploring their options to serve in the Armed Forces post-graduation.

The Program Director provides visionary leadership and strategic planning for OMAS with guidance from the Assistant Vice President for Campus Life Engagement. The Program Director provides campus expertise related to military veterans as a component of institutional diversity, as well as on opportunities to serve in the United States military. Primary responsibility is advising and supporting military-affiliated students (students who have served, are serving, or are interested in serving in the United States military), dependents of United States military veterans, and international students who have or are serving in the militaries of other nations. Among other activities, the Program Director partners with various admission and recruitment staffs to recruit veteran applicants; develops campus and local networks to ensure information about opportunities is available; coordinates programs and develops Web, print, and social media communications; and collaborates with various offices (e.g., Institutional Equity & Diversity, Financial Aid, Office of the Dean of the College, Warren Alpert Medical School, etc.) to develop policies and practices that are veteran-friendly and support student choice to pursue military officer commissioning opportunities. The Program Director also acts as ROTC Coordinator and point of contact for the Air Force, Army, and Navy crosstown ROTC programs. The Program Director develops learning outcomes for students involved with the center's programs and initiatives, assessment of programs and services, and provides outreach and support for Graduate and Medical School students. The Program Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Campus Life Engagement.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required with 5-7 years of direct experience, preferably in the United States military (this may include time on active duty) and/or an academic setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.

    Job Competencies
    • Familiarity with systems and services of the United States military, Veterans Affairs, and/or collegiate opportunities for military officer commissioning. Knowledge or experience of the Veterans Affairs certification process is a plus.
    • Knowledge of federal rules and regulations by the Veterans Administration.
    • Experience in creating and implementing a developmental leadership program for college students.
    • Familiarity with the benefits and potential challenges and impacts of military service related to a service member's ability to be successful as a student required. Experience with advising, counseling, and/or supporting former, current, and prospective members of the armed forces preferred.
    • Knowledge of special needs of veterans and available financial aid benefits.
    • Demonstrated success in personnel and fiscal management, including ability to manage a department budget.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to exercise a high degree of judgement, diplomacy and discretion.
    • Understanding of leadership development for college age students through an asset-based approach.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and appreciation for the value of a liberal education required.
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, collaborate and consult effectively, and be a creative problem solver.
    • Good organizational, administrative, and time management skills required.
    • Experience with Web and print communications and/or program planning or development is helpful.
    • Agility and familiarity with the latest software, database systems, and computer literacy.
    • Strong commitment to supporting the University's goal of cultivating a diverse and inclusive community.
    • Complete other duties and projects, as assigned.
