This is not your typical higher ed beat: IU accounts for half of the population of Bloomington and draws an audience from across Indiana and beyond. You'll need to be skilled in source development, use of public records and databases, have a digital-first mindset and be willing to go beyond a press release or meeting. You'll also have the opportunity to drive readership and engagement by jumping on stories essential to our community by dispelling hoaxes, delving into the subjects people are talking about and telling the stories of the people and places that make Bloomington and Monroe County special. And this place is special: Our small community feels like a big city, but with shorter commutes. Whether you are interested in live music, innovative art, sports or the outdoors, Bloomington and Monroe County offer some of the best entertainment and cultural enrichment options in the state. Our culinary scene is rich with ethnic establishments and restauranteurs willing to try new things. We're also within easy driving distance to several major cities. In The Herald-Times newsroom you will find seasoned reporters, a supportive editing team and encouragement and pathways to achieve your career goals. Whether you're just starting out or want to call Bloomington home for the long term, The Herald-Times provides a welcoming environment. Requirements: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least a year of journalism experience. Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style. Thorough understanding of journalism ethics. Proficiency using social media to report and promote stories. Willingness to allow data to drive decisions and an understanding of SEO. Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure. A driver's license. Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Application Instructions: We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order: 1. Your resume - one to two pages. 2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job. 3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you've produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role. It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration. #Newsgnt #LI-CB1 Gannett Co., Inc. is a proud equal opportunity employer committed to building and maintaining a diverse workforce.
