This position is responsible for the design and/or fabrication of advanced scientific research equipment through the use of CAD software, CNC mills, lathes and other various machine shop equipment with an emphasis on mechanical structure and fabrication aspects. The person selected for this role will conduct mechanical analysis of structural, vacuum, and pressure systems. Consults with faculty, students, and staff providing mechanical design and engineering guidance in the construction of projects (choosing materials, improving designs, fabrication cost/time estimating), and conducts repairs/improvements of existing equipment.Computer Aided Design, fabrication techniques, CNC milling, CNC lathes, manual lathe, manual milling machine, welding skills, sheet metal, woodworking, rigging, and engineering of scientific research instrumentation.Begin with a conceptual idea for scientific equipment, then create mechanical designs/analysis using (CAD) software for the construction of new scientific apparatus or to rework previous designs. Produce design specifications, 3D models, fabrication drawings and procedures needed to fabricate, test and commission the designs. Perform mechanical analysis of structural, vacuum, and pressure systems.Consult with Faculty, Students, and Staff on design and construction of pending products. Manage fabrication of components using internal department machine shop resources or external vendors. Select, cut, and perform machining of various metal, plastics, ceramics/exotics to make new scientific apparatus or rework previous designs.Evaluate sketches and drawings to identify potential fabrication/safety issues and assist in development of contract specifications and quality control procedures. Determine the time and materials needed to complete the project. Prepare cost and schedule estimates for planning and budgeting purposes.Coordinate testing and assembly of manufactured components including training of technicians or students and documentation of assembly procedures. Will supervise, as needed, for specific projects requiring high pressure, structural, and hydraulic safety concerns. REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology or related field and three years of experience as a machinist, one year of engineering in design, fabrication, construction, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of scientific instruments.Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Computer Aided Design, fabrication techniques, CNC milling, CNC lathes, manual lathe, manual milling machine, welding skills, sheet metal, woodworking, rigging, and engineering of scientific research instrumentation.
