Summary This position is within Campus Environmental Health and
Safety and reports to the campus supervisor for the Biological
Safety Program. The Assistant Biological Safety Officer performs
functions supporting the Biosafety Program including reviewing
research protocols that propose using recombinant DNA, infectious
agents, toxins of biological origin, and human materials, and
providing advice for appropriate bio-containment of their use.
Increases regulatory compliance through blood-borne pathogen and
biological safety training of campus staff, faculty and students.
Performs annual inspections of laboratories. May assist with
biannual inspections of campus Biosafety Level 3 laboratories. Acts
as a resource, answering questions and offering expert advice
related to the use of bio-hazardous materials on campus and
completing designated tasks as required. Please note: the IU
Bloomington campus does not currently have a Biosafety Level 3
laboratory. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in
Microbiology, Biology, Public Health, Infectious Diseases, or a
related field and three years of experience working in a position
related to biosafety, research compliance, or related research.
Combinations of education and related experience may be considered.
Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by
Indiana University. Any offer and future continued employment is
contingent upon successful completion of a DOJ / FBI Security Risk
Assessment for individuals seeking access to select biological
agents and toxins. Excellent verbal and written communication
skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Familiarity with Microsoft
Office Suite. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree. Current
certification or eligible for certification by ABSA (RBP or CBSP).
Working knowledge of NIH and CDC guidelines. Working Conditions /
Demands May be required to wear an N-95 respirator and pass annual
fit testing. May also need to wear and properly use a purified air
personal respirator (PAPR) along with various other items listed as
personal protective equipment. Certification of Biosafety Level 3
laboratories may require learned familiarity with various pieces of
equipment that measure airflow and pressure differentials. Must be
able to drive a vehicle and use handheld instruments, phone and a
computer. Must be able to stand for extended periods, use a ladder
and lift 25 pounds from the floor to waist high. Must have the
ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment,
including a respirator. Occasional, limited travel to other IU
campuses may be required to assist with the duties listed above.
